On the Issues

Here are some of the highlights of my policy priorities:

End the Corrupt Influence of Money in Politics

Money in politics is the rotten core of our political system. We will never make progress on any of our most pressing issues until we create a political system that actually works for everyone. I help create and pass Maine’s Clean Elections program that allows everyday people, not just the rich and connected, to run for office. Let’s make that program federal. Let’s repeal Citizen’s United. Let’s require PACs disclose all donors. And that’s just a start.

Medicare for All

No one should go without healthcare. I will fight like hell for this.

A Green New Deal

Maine can become the #1 producer of renewable energy in the nation. We need to transition quickly to a clean economy, one that creates the jobs and industries of the future rather than continuing our dependency on polluting fossil fuels. We can do that with bold action and federal investment.

A Strong Maine Economy and Local Jobs

Because we need to support our Maine businesses and rural economies and keep more of our money right here at home.

Pro-Choice and Pro-Women’s Health Services

Having control over our own bodies is the bottom line.  There is no equality without it. And it is meaningless unless we have access to quality services in our own communities.

Experience

I have spent over three decades as an advocate in the state house in Augusta. I championed women’s issues as the Executive Director of the Maine Women’s Lobby and as the Commissioner for Women under two governors.  I started an advocacy business, Moose Ridge Associates, in 1996 when I realized the Mainers who really needed a voice at the table were not being represented. I asked a lot of people who needed representation to each give a little so that collectively we could have a strong voice in Augusta.

In my work as an advocate, I have fought for reproductive rights, equal pay for equal work, benefits for the elderly, and support for people with disabilities. I have advocated for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, for LGBTQ rights, and for the protection of Maine’s incredible natural resources. I have helped gain significant victories for all of these groups in Maine. I wrote and helped pass the first Family Medical Leave Act in the country, and I helped create the first Clean Elections system in the country right here in Maine because I saw first-hand the corrupting influence of money in politics and policy making.

Outside of the statehouse, I worked to create the Civil Rights Team Project, an anti-bullying program that is now in over 400 schools. I provide sexual harassment prevention training for businesses, schools, and agencies. I am also the proud single mom of three spectacular young women.

We need a courageous voice in Washington: our voice--not that of corporations, special interests, and big donors. I am running for the Senate because now is not the time for half measures or baby steps. We have to take bold action to fix the serious challenges posed by unaffordable healthcare, the climate crisis that’s ruining our fisheries and farming economies, and racial and gender inequity and injustice. We need to take our democracy back. I want to be your voice in Washington, so that Mainers will have a fighting chance.

I’m running for US Senate because now is the time for urgent and bold action.

I have spent my life fighting for Mainers - health care for all, good jobs, protecting a woman’s right to choose. We have serious challenges in our communities and our families, and we used to think that Susan Collins had our backs. But this past year has shown us that Susan Collins is not on our side. I’m running because Mainers need someone who will listen to us and fight for us.

If you want politics as usual, I’m not your candidate. But if you want someone who has spent the last 37 years working to fix what is broken in our political system, I am the candidate for you.

Change only happens when we demand it and then act on our beliefs. That’s what this campaign is about. We win this by knocking on every door, talking to every neighbor, sharing our values, figuring out practical solutions that work, and connecting with enough grassroots donors to beat the corrupting tide of money in politics.
