Betsy's Bio


Advocate.  Betsy is the founder and Principal of Moose Ridge Associates, which since 1990 has promoted state legislation supporting the interests of women, elderly, people with disabilities and mental health issues,  victims of abuse and discrimination, and the environment. She is known as a long time advocate and spokesperson for women and the LGBTQ community. Betsy co-managed an upset victory congressional campaign for progressive Tom Andrews in 1990. Betsy was a pioneer in women’s advocacy in Maine as Director of the Maine Women's Lobby and the Maine Commission for Women under two Governors in the 1980s. She researched and helped write Maine’s first Clean Election law and the first Family Medical Leave Act in the country. She has worked on every state budget for the last 35 years to insure funding for crucial services for Maine people. Her first two pieces of legislation were to raise the minimum wage and to ensure that equality in education was included in the Maine Human Rights Act.

Organizer.  Betsy helped found the Dirigo Alliance, the Maine Center for Economic Policy, the Women's Legislative Agenda Coalition “Maine Can Do Better” and numerous other progressive coalitions over the years, knowing that we are smarter together than we are alone. She has run numerous state level legislative races and organized referendum campaigns. Betsy serves as a hate crime and sexual harassment prevention trainer, facilitator and organizational development consultant. She co-founded the Civil Rights Team Project in the Attorney General’s office and served as lead trainer and curriculum developer at the Center for the Prevention of Hate Crimes. In 2007, Betsy went back to school to get her Master's Degree in spiritual psychology at the University of Santa Monica and has a counseling practice and coaching business.  


Mom.  Betsy has 3 spectacular daughters, one adorable dog, and lives in Hallowell, Maine. She served as booster parent; her home has been the gathering place for many kids; she worked tirelessly on school reform efforts. Her oldest daughter graduated from Connecticut College and lives in Boston, working for Oxfam International Relief organization. Her twins are sophomores at Goucher and Connecticut College.
